June’s Literary Events

Monday, May 29th, 2006

I finally got around to listing June’s Seattle events on my events page. I won’t be around for most of them due to my upcoming vacation. Luckily, I’ll be back in time to hear Nancy Pearl discuss this summer’s hot books.

Black Swan Green

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

I gave up reading Black Swan Green by David Mitchell in the middle of chapter one. Yes, it was that dull. However, the New York Times has a positive review of Black Swan Green. I could find only one negative comment in the entire review: “Black Swan Green is uneventful, at least in comparison with [...]

Books for the Cruise

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

I’m trying to decide which books I should bring on my vacation to Alaska. Obviously, I won’t be bringing hardcovers (too heavy and I’d worry about damaging them). Should I bring light reads (mysteries, thrillers, chick lit) or something more challenging? How many books should I expect to read during a 1-week cruise?

SIFF: This Film Is Not Yet Rated

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

On Saturday night, Christian and I attended our first Seattle International Film Festival movie for the 2006 season. This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a wonderful documentary by Kirby Dick that investigates the MPAA and their questionable rating system process. I was going to write a full review, but instead I suggest reading Jason’s [...]

How’s everyone doing? I’ve been so busy lately that my inbox is quite full of mail. I will try to respond to everyone this weekend. In The Stranger this week, eight authors review Charles D’Ambrosio’s new collection of short stories entitled The Dead Fish Museum. The reviewers include some big names such as Jonathan Lethem and Dale “Hatchet Job” Peck. The Hay Festival in Wales will begin on May 26th. The New York Times has an interesting article about the [...]

Tonight: Shirin Ebadi at Town Hall

Friday, May 12th, 2006

2003 Nobel Prize Winner Shirin Ebadi will be speaking at Town Hall tonight at 7:30 PM to promote her autobiography Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope. I’m very interested in hearing what Ebadi has to say about women in Iran. I’ve read Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran and saw her speak recently [...]

I Got No Reset For This Game

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

I have to say that I am officially addicted to Nintendo DS’s Brain Age game. It’s basically a handful of logic puzzle games that you play everyday to keep your brain stimulated or as Nintendo says, “Exercise Your Brain.” In addition, you can do a series of games that will tell you the “age” of [...]
