Seattle Most Literate City in U.S.

December 4th, 2005

Seattle Public LibraryAmerica’s Most Literate Cities 2005, a study by John Miller of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, ranks Seattle as number one. This study is in its third year (last two year Seattle was #2), but the study added a new factor for 2005 – internet resources. According to the USA Today article, the other factors include newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, and educational attainment.

In a Seattle PI article written about the study, I learned that 80 percent of Seattle residents have a library card. I’d love to see the percentage of people with library cards in other cities like San Francisco, Manhattan, Chicago, and Boston. More specifically, I’d like to know how many actually use their library card.

Nancy Pearl commented on Seattle’s bookstores in the PI article:

The fact that Seattle continues to support its independent bookstores with such enthusiasm, even when indie bookstores are closing all over the country — it’s a sign of how much we love our books.

My favorite Seattle independent bookstore? Bailey/Coy Books on Capitol Hill.
