Mr. Vampire

February 26th, 2006

Mr Vampire My friend Chris recommended that I rent “Mr. Vampire” this weekend. The guys at Lunch Money (my local video store) were thrilled to finally rent the movie.

According to the back of the DVD case, “Mr. Vampire seamlessly infuses kung fu with horror and humor, effectively defining martial arts vampire movies for the years to come.” It really felt like “Evil Dead” in China.

Things I learned while watching Mr. Vampire:

  • Vampires move around by hopping like rabbits *
  • Chickens in China can fly
  • Sticky rice will help protect humans from vampires, but not other types of rice
  • Ghost make good lovers
  • Pulling down your master’s pants will help him get his head unstuck from between prison bars

* More information on this. A Chinese vampire is called a vampyroo: A hopping vampire, often featured in Hong Kong movies. Largely idestructible, vampyroos hop like a kangaroo, occasionally indulging in martial arts and 30-foot leaps. Quelled by attaching a handwritten controlling curse to the forehead.
